OUR PROJECT
The class of Draughtsmanship (1st year) has decided to make a project about the construction of a house to put in practice the acquired knowledge in our course.
We made a brainstorm to decide how we were going to work and what kind of house we were going to do.
1ST DAY
First of all we surfed in the net to have many ideas. Some of us found many kinds of classic houses and others found modern ones.
Finally we decided to make a mix of styles and began to make an outline.
2nd DAY
Once we approved the outline, we made a sketch and thought in the activities we had to do.
- Chosen materials
- Budget
- Deadlines
- Design
- Rolls
- Activities
3rd DAY
We finished the final design and draw it with AutoCAD to choose the scale and dimensions.
According to the scale we thought in the dimensions of the materials to buy them.
We decided who was going to buy some materials (cardboard) to make the structure, and phoned to some specialized shops to ask for many prices.
We got some cardboard from the drawing class at the high school.
4th DAY
We made the final design in 3D whit the pc game “The Sims 3”.
Once we began to cut the cardboard with the initial dimensions, we realized it would be better to enlarge 5cm the dimensions of the house.
Many of us were drawing the plans on the material to be cut.
After having drawn the plans, we cut carefully the cardboard with cutters.
We decided to modify the second floor to manage a better assembly. It will be supported by the walls made of cardboard.
5th DAY
We have finished cutting all the parts of the house: walls, floors, front wall.
We have been thinking about how to make stairs: an inclined structure (ramp) or an original designer stairs (with no structure or ramp).
We have been planning where we are going to place windows and doors (inside doors and principal one).
We have made a colour taste on the material to proof the effect and behaviour of the cardboard.
6th DAY
We have calculated the stairs: treads, risers, steps, width, parapet…
We have been thinking how we are going to dimension the bathroom, and the situation of the furniture. We have decided we are going to install a shower place instead a bath.
7th DAY
One of us has painted the steps in black with tempera picture.
We have cut the floor framing to fit the stairs into the shaft.
The parapet has been thought to be made with a transparent material as plastic or polyurethane.
We have begun to use the electric glue gun to check how it works, and we have put into it the special glue bar.
8th DAY
We have calculate the window openings, and they have been: 11,5x7 cm
We have cut the cardboard to install the frame windows.
We have begun to construct the house. First we have stuck two of the walls with melted glue.
Then we have stuck the front wall and a perpendicular one to the floor.
Finally we have stuck the third wall to the structure.
One of us has been designing the kitchen with the computer to make the different elements at home.
9th DAY
We have though and design the stringer of the second part of the stair, and we have cut the cardboard using a cutter.
We have stuck the steps and the landing in the wall with glue using the electrical glue gun.
Then we have stuck the rest of the steps over the stringer.
One of us has been building the kitchen furniture.
We have stuck the bedroom wall to the floor of the second floor with glue.
We have been deciding how we are going to install a parapet in the flat roof: with an enter piece of cardboard or many pieces, with different points of sticking.
10th DAY
One of us has painted the string piece with black tempera and a thin paintbrush.
We have installed the steps over the string piece with glue, using the electrical glue gun. It has been very complicated because we have had to consider the inclination of the string piece and the steps´ one to fit into the stair landing.
One of us has finished the kitchen furniture design in AutoCad 3D and has begun to make it.
We have noticed a small mistake in a joint and we have decided to solve it with a thin piece of cardboard to fill the gap left between the walls of the second floor.
We have been deciding how we are going to make the living room furniture: colours according to the rest of the decoration, materials, shapes and textures, designs...and who are going to make them. After looking at all the options to decorating the house, we have considered the black colour.
We have finally decided the design of the chairs. They will be made of cardboard and painted in red and black.
Other of us has been thinking about the bathroom design.
11TH DAY
One of us has made the kitchen: furniture, cupboard, fridge, sink, oven, washing machine and cooker using plywood recovered with Eva foam. The sink has been made with a part of an ice cube cooler and grey acrylic painter. The extractor hood has been made of American slide tape. All the kitchen walls and the floor have been recovered with painted paper simulating decorated tiles. A kitchen clock has been installed over the fridge.
Another of us has been designing the furniture bathroom with AutoCad using the scale 1:14.
We have decided the design and colour of the chairs. They will be painted in redJ.
We have been cutting the cardboard to make the chairs and the living room table, using glue.
One of us has made a television with painted cardboard.
12th DAY
Some of us have decided to change the original design to enlarge the first floor area. We have noticed the space was very small to include the kitchen area and the living room.
So we have included many extra cubic metres with cardboard to relocate the kitchen furniture.
One of us has been thinking about the parapet: material, dimensions, design...
Another of us has been looking for a chequered floor design into the internet, and he has printed it with the plotter. Then he has cut it according to the new extra floor and has been glued to the subfloor with stick bar.
The furniture bedroom has been made with cardboard and glue.
The bed has been made with cardboard, as its legs. The wardrobe has been made of cardboard too, and will be painted in red.
The living room chairs have been painted in red.
13th DAY
We have recollected all the photos we have been taken during the project. Two of us have been taken them with their personal mobiles and have shared them in Dropbox.
We have bought many materials to make the garden and the green zone on the roof.
We have used a special green textile: felt, to simulate the grass. And it has been fixed to the cardboard with glue. At first we thought in staples, using a stapler, but it wasn’t a good idea.
As we have decided, the first floor area has been enlarged, and many of us have been working on it, fixing an extra piece of cardboard to the original one and relocating the kitchen. They have had to cut the wall we have had fixed some days ago, but the result has been worth the effort!
Some of us have been making the parapet with rectangular pieces of cardboard that have been cut with the cutter. They have been stuck with glue using the electrical glue gun and rectangular pieces of plastic to simulate a glass protector.
14th DAY
We have been discussing about the swimming pool construction. Many of us were for the pool, and some of us have thought in an inclined roof solution. Finally we will have an amazing poolJ!!
We have been making the pool with cardboard and we will be simulating the water with blue felt. The parapet has been cut to make the access to the pool, and a parapet will be made to protect the pool area.
The bathroom furniture has been done with cardboard and glue and the design has been taken from the net.
15th DAY
We have decided to install many hammocks, and we have constructed them with cardboard.
One of us has been sticking the parts of the bathroom furniture with the glue bar.
The rest of us have been finishing the kitchen details as cupboards, clock, hood...
Once again we have changed the roof design. There will be a top light (tragaluz) above the swimming pool.
16th DAY
The last day!
We have finished the swimming pool construction. It has been fixed to the roof and a piece of green felt has simulated a green area to relax.
The pool area parapet has been finished in cardboard and glue, and the rest of relax elements (sunshade, hammock) have been finished.
The bathroom has been finished too. The floor has been printed and glued to the subfloor with stick bar, and the washbasin, the toilet, the shower have been finished.
The living room furniture has been completed with another sofa.
The curtains of all the windows have been designed in orange and yellow felt (yellow on the subfloor and orange in the first floor).
We have been taking care of every detail (Insulating tape to finish off windows frames, installing the plasma TV, ...).
To finish our project we have closed the second floor with an inclined roof framing, made of brown cardboard that we have recover with a decorated paper to simulate a tile roof.
